The tech ad that got a Luddite to buy
Date: July 14, 2024
A few weeks back, I was doing research for a client, and as a… creative aside… I start watching a video about why the iPad dominates the tablet market.
It was 12 minutes long…
And the guy’s spinning this fascinating yarn about how, despite having hundreds of Android competitors offering sleek tablets at a fraction of the price, the iPad is spanking them silly in sales.
In fact..
The iPad is so dominant, I’d eat my own hat if you can even name *one* of their competitors.
(Well, can you?)
Anyhow..
At the end of the vid, the guy says:
“And you know what else people love about the iPad?
“The fact that you can draw on it with a stylus.”
He continues:
“However, this is actually the one thing I *dislike* about the iPad. Reason being, I’m a pen and paper guy, and I hate the feeling of the stylus on the screen.”
“But,” he says with a pause,
“You can get this neat thing called Paperslide which you stick on the iPad just like a screen protector and bam – it makes the screen feel exactly like paper.”
He starts scribbling on it.
“Listen.
“It even sounds like paper.”
And sure enough, it makes a satisfying scribbling noise that only pencil on paper can make.
Now…
At this point, dear reader, you should know:
I’m practically a Luddite.
If I could hgo back to horse and carts, I’d be sorely sorely tempted. I despise kindles, and e-books, and smartphones of all kinds. And the thought of note-taking on an iPad makes me want to vomit.
But seeing this?
I’m like, “Dang that’s cool. Gimme one.”
So what does the guy in the video say next?
“And if you want to try Paperslide, go to their website at www.blahblahblah and get 25% off using promocode, “TOTALLYNOTALUDDITE25”
I gotta tell you:
I’ve watched hundreds of Youtube sponsorship ads. I’ve never – I repeat – NEVER been interested by any of them.
But this?
I was impressed.
Now, I don’t really know how this story will help your business sell more products via email. But it does remind me of a quote which could.
“People don’t read ads. They read things that interest them. Sometimes that’s an ad.”
